The Lab · Online Improv Classes

Improv for people stuck in their heads.

The Lab is a four-week online improv class built on one idea: being funny is a by-product of being present. Instead of drilling joke formulas, you'll practice the thing underneath good improv and good living: listening, following your impulses, and connecting with other people in real time. It's a gentler, brighter, easier way to improvise, taught live on Zoom by Jet Eveleth, and it's open to complete beginners and stuck veterans alike. The techniques will be new to everyone.

Who this is for

Three people sign up for this class.

The total beginner

You've never improvised and the idea terrifies you slightly. Good, that's the right amount. There's no way to do this wrong, nobody is graded, and the fear usually turns into the fun by week two.

The stuck improviser

You've taken the classes, you know the rules, and somewhere along the way it stopped feeling free. This class works on the layer underneath the rules, where the joy went.

The person who needs to play

You're not chasing a stage. You want one evening a week where you laugh, connect with people, and remember what your imagination feels like. That's a complete reason.

The curriculum

Four weeks, four muscles

We focus on finding ease: presence instead of panic, listening instead of planning, connection instead of performance. Each week builds one muscle:

1

Getting out of your head

The State: the relaxed, alert place your best ideas come from. You'll learn to find it on purpose instead of by accident.

2

Real listening

Most of what we call listening is waiting to talk. You'll practice the other kind, where your partner's last word becomes your next idea.

3

Dreaming together

Building worlds with other people in real time: characters, places, and stories none of you could have planned alone. This is where the magic lives.

4

Trusting your instincts

The split brain: how to be in the scene and gently steering it at once, without the inner critic grabbing the wheel.
